Chapter 8 - THE DETECTIVE'S EVIDENCE

Author:

At eight o'clock the following morning, Detective Sarah Ramirez from the county family protection division arrived at the hospital ward.

She carried a thick, tabbed manila case file under her arm and requested a private word with both parents in the quiet family consultation room.

Elena stood with her arms crossed by the window, while David sat at the low table, his hands clasped tightly together.

Detective Ramirez set the file down on the table, opening it to reveal crime scene photographs of the patio, the iron planter, and printouts of the home’s interior security logs.

"Mr. Miller, Ms. Vance," Detective Ramirez began in a quiet, authoritative tone. "The county prosecutor reviewed the four-K patio surveillance footage at three this morning. The charges against Chloe Miller have been officially upgraded."

David looked up, his jaw set. "What are the charges, Detective?"

"Attempted aggravated assault of a minor, reckless endangerment creating a substantial risk of death, and unlawful imprisonment," Ramirez stated flatly. "Because the outdoor temperature at the time of the incident was verified by the National Weather Service at four degrees Fahrenheit, the prosecutor filed under Class B felony statutes."

Elena leaned forward, her voice trembling with intense emotion. "Has her father tried to post bail?"

Detective Ramirez allowed herself a thin, grim smile.

"Judge Harrison presided over the emergency arraignment at dawn," Ramirez answered. "Chloe's attorney argued for immediate release on personal recognizance, citing her family’s standing in the community. Judge Harrison watched the video of your son pounding on that glass, denied bail outright, and remanded her to the county detention facility until the preliminary hearing."

David let out a long, heavy breath, resting his forehead in his hands.

"There’s more, Mr. Miller," Detective Ramirez continued, tapping a second document in the file. "We executed a search warrant on the master bedroom and Chloe's personal laptop last night."

David looked up sharply. "What did you find?"

"A series of encrypted text messages between Chloe and a private estate planning attorney from last month," Ramirez revealed, sliding the transcripts across the table. "She was actively inquiring about legal mechanisms to alter the trust structure of your life insurance policy, specifically seeking to remove Leo as the primary beneficiary in favor of any future biological children she had with you."

Elena gasped in pure horror, her hand flying to her mouth.

David felt the blood turn to ice in his veins as he read the cold, calculated words printed on the police transcript.

Chloe hadn't just lost her temper over a toy block.

She had despised the little boy from the moment she walked into the house, viewing Leo as nothing more than a legal and financial obstacle that stood between her and the entirety of David’s wealth.

"She wanted him gone, David," Elena whispered, her voice shaking with righteous fury. "She wanted him gone, and she was ready to let the winter do it for her."
