Within seven minutes, the quiet suburban cul-de-sac was bathed in the harsh, rhythmic glare of pulsing red and white emergency strobes.
An ambulance and two marked township police cruisers came to an abrupt halt in the snowy circular driveway, tires throwing up spray against the hedges.
Two paramedics carrying heavy orange emergency jump bags sprinted up the cleared front walkway, accompanied by Officer Bradley, the township's senior patrolman.
David swung the heavy front door open before they could even ring the bell.
"In the kitchen! Quick!" David shouted, leading the medical team across the foyer.
Elena was seated on the wide leather ottoman near the stone fireplace, cradling Leo in her lap while keeping him wrapped in the warm wool blanket.
The little boy was still shivering, his small teeth clicking together rhythmically as dry sobs hitched in his throat.
The lead paramedic, a burly man named Harris, dropped to his knees in front of the child, immediately unclipping a digital tympanic thermometer.
"Let’s see what we have here, little guy," Harris said softly, sliding the probe into Leo’s ear.
The device gave three sharp, shrill beeps.
Harris glanced at the digital readout, and his friendly expression vanished into a tight, grim line.
"Core body temperature is ninety-three point eight degrees," Harris announced grimly to his partner. "We're looking at moderate stage two accidental hypothermia. Begin active external rewarming immediately. Get the thermal foil wraps and warm saline packs from the rig."
Officer Bradley stepped into the center of the kitchen, taking off his wet patrol cap and looking at the shattered patio glass behind the island.
"Mr. Miller, what happened here?" the officer asked, unbuttoning his ticket book and pulling out a pen. "The dispatcher reported an injured juvenile and property damage."
Chloe stepped forward before David could answer, gliding smoothly across the floor with an air of practiced, untouchable elegance.
"Officer, it was a simple misunderstanding," Chloe began with a warm, apologetic smile. "My stepson threw a severe tantrum and slipped out the patio door when my back was turned. Before I could retrieve him, his mother arrived, became completely hysterical, and threw a heavy stone planter through our patio window."
Chloe pointed an accusatory, manicured finger directly at Elena.
"I want her arrested for felony vandalism and criminal trespass immediately," Chloe demanded.
Elena looked up from her son, her eyes burning with pure, unadulterated contempt.
"She locked the door, Officer," Elena said, her voice shaking with quiet, lethal fury. "She stood inside in a fur coat, drank wine, and watched him cry through the glass. My son told me she threw him out into the snowdrifts by his collar."
Leo buried his face deeper into Elena’s coat, whimpering softly in the warmth of the foil blanket.
Officer Bradley looked from the sobbing toddler to Chloe's pristine white fur coat, his jaw setting into hard, skeptical lines.
"We will examine the physical evidence and the home security systems, ma'am," Bradley said to Chloe in a flat, unyielding tone. "Nobody is leaving this property until we establish the timeline."
