Chapter 18 - THE VERDICT

Author:

The jury deliberated for less than three hours before the buzzer rang twice through the quiet corridors of the courthouse.

The courtroom fell into a dead, breathless silence as the twelve jurors filed back into the wooden box, their faces solemn and unreadable.

Judge Harrison took her seat on the bench, turning toward the foreperson, a retired elementary school teacher named Mrs. Gable.

"Has the jury reached a unanimous verdict?" Judge Harrison inquired.

"We have, Your Honor," the foreperson replied clearly, handing a folded paper slip to the court bailiff.

Judge Harrison reviewed the sheet, nodded once, and instructed the defendant to rise.

Chloe stood on shaking legs, clutching the edge of the defense table with pale, sweaty fingers as her lead attorney stood beside her.

"On count one, felony aggravated child endangerment with substantial risk of death," Judge Harrison read aloud. "The jury finds the defendant, Chloe Ward, guilty as charged."

Chloe let out a sharp, choked gasp, her knees buckling until her attorney caught her elbow to hold her upright.

"On count two, felony unlawful imprisonment of a minor dependent: guilty as charged."

"On count three, criminal child abuse through malicious exposure: guilty as charged."

A quiet wave of relieved whispers rippled through the gallery benches.

In the second row, Elena closed her eyes tight, burying her face into David’s shoulder as warm tears of profound relief soaked through his suit.

David wrapped his arms tightly around her, whispering words of gratitude into her hair.

Judge Harrison did not waste a single moment proceeding to immediate sentencing under the state’s expedited child victim statutes.

She adjusted her glasses and looked down from the bench with cold, unyielding moral clarity.

"Ms. Ward, you treated a helpless four-year-old child with calculating, sadistic cruelty," Judge Harrison stated, her words striking the room like hammer blows. "You attempted to use the freezing winter climate as an instrument of punishment, and had his mother not intervened, that boy would have died on your patio."

Judge Harrison raised her wooden gavel high into the air.

"It is the sentence of this court that you serve eight years in the custody of the Department of Corrections at the Marysville Women's Facility, with no eligibility for parole for five years."

The gavel came down with an explosive, definitive crack.

Chloe screamed in raw, hysterical horror as two female state bailiffs snapped the heavy steel handcuffs around her wrists and dragged her out through the holding corridor doors forever.
