Chapter 6 - HANDCUFFS ON FUR

The silence in the kitchen was thick, heavy, and suffocating.

On the monitor, the digital timestamp showed Leo pounding on the glass for fourteen agonizing minutes in the sub-zero wind before Elena’s figure sprinted across the snowbank to save him.

Fourteen minutes of a four-year-old child freezing on a patio while his stepmother poured wine inside a heated room.

David slowly pushed his chair back from the desk, his hands trembling so violently he could barely keep his footing.

He turned toward Chloe, his eyes bloodshot, filled with a sickening mixture of heartbreak and pure, murderous rage.

"Fourteen minutes, Chloe?" David whispered, his voice trembling on the edge of an explosion. "You locked him out there for fourteen minutes?"

Chloe backed away from the desk, her polished heels clicking unevenly against the hardwood as she held both hands out defensively.

"David, listen to me, the timer on my phone didn't go off!" she stammered, her voice shrill with unraveling panic. "I lost track of time! I was upstairs in the dressing room touching up my makeup for our anniversary! It was an accident! A terrible, unfortunate accident!"

"An accident?" Officer Bradley snapped, his voice booming through the high ceilings. "Ma'am, you locked a deadbolt latch from the inside and walked away from a screaming child in freezing weather. That is not an accident. That is premeditated reckless endangerment of a minor."

Bradley stepped forward, drawing the heavy steel cuffs from his belt with a sharp metallic clink.

"Chloe Miller, turn around and place your hands behind your back," Bradley ordered.

"Get away from me!" Chloe shrieked, darting behind the marble kitchen island. "Do you know who my father is? My father sits on the county judicial appointment committee! You cannot arrest me in my own home over a disciplinary dispute!"

"Ma'am, do not resist an officer," Bradley warned, his hand moving to his side. "Put your hands behind your back now."

Chloe looked desperately at David, her eyes wide, tears finally ruining the mascara on her lashes.

"David! Tell him! Tell this idiot who we are! You cannot let them drag me out of here like a common criminal!" she pleaded, reaching out toward him.

David looked at her as if she were a total stranger.

"I don't know who you are," David said, his voice flat, hollow, and utterly dead. "The woman I married wouldn't murder a child for touching the furniture."

Officer Bradley stepped around the island with rapid efficiency, seized Chloe’s right wrist, twisted her arm behind her back, and clicked the cold steel bracelet around her bone.

Chloe screamed in indignation as the second cuff snapped shut, pinning her wrists tightly against the expensive white fur of her coat.

"Officer Davies, escort the suspect to cruiser one!" Bradley called out toward the foyer.

The second officer entered, taking Chloe firmly by the upper arm and marching her past the shattered patio glass into the snowy night.

Her hysterical shrieks echoed down the circular driveway as the squad car door slammed shut with a heavy, final thud.
