Chapter 13 - THE GRAND JURY INDICTMENT

Author:

Three weeks later, the county grand jury convened on the third floor of the criminal courts building downtown.

The courtroom corridors were packed with reporters, local television crews, and curious spectators who had followed the shocking story of the society wife and the frozen patio.

Chloe’s father, retired Judge Harold Ward, stood near the water cooler surrounded by three high-priced criminal defense attorneys in custom charcoal suits.

His face was grim, tight, and furious, refusing to speak to the microphones shoved in his direction.

Inside the closed grand jury chamber, the prosecutors played the unedited four-K surveillance recording from the Meadowbrook residence on two fifty-inch flat screens.

The grand jurors watched the high-definition footage in complete, horrified silence.

They saw Chloe’s callous smirk as she dragged the sobbing child by his collar.

They saw her slam the glass sliding door shut and deliberately turn the heavy brass lock.

They watched the time elapsed counter tick upward minute by minute: six minutes, nine minutes, twelve minutes, fourteen minutes of a four-year-old child freezing in sub-zero snow.

And then they watched Elena throw the iron planter through the glass to rescue her baby.

The grand jury took less than twenty-five minutes of private deliberation to return their formal verdict.

At eleven o'clock sharp, the foreperson walked into the main courtroom and handed the sealed manila envelope to presiding Judge Katherine Harrison.

Judge Harrison unfolded the document, adjusted her spectacles, and looked down from the bench at Chloe, who sat at the defense table in a navy blue county-issued holding suit.

"On count one, attempted aggravated assault of a minor dependent: a true bill," Judge Harrison read aloud, her voice ringing off the oak-paneled walls.

"On count two, reckless endangerment resulting in serious bodily injury: a true bill."

"On count three, felony child abuse through malicious exposure: a true bill."

Chloe’s lead defense attorney leaned in quickly, attempting to make an impassioned plea for bail reduction based on community ties and lack of prior convictions.

Judge Harrison cut him off with a sharp, resounding crack of her wooden gavel.

"Counsel, your client exhibited callous, depraved indifference to the life of a four-year-old dependent placed in her care," Judge Harrison stated with absolute moral authority. "She used freezing winter conditions as a weapon of physical abuse. Bail remains strictly denied. The defendant will be transferred immediately to the state women's correctional facility to await trial."

Chloe shrieked in terror as the bailiffs grabbed her by the elbows, her manicured nails clawing helplessly at the oak table as she was dragged down the holding cell stairs.
