Chapter 4 - THE PROMOTION FILE

Mrs. Dalton had applied to become Ridgeview’s new dean of student culture.

The position had been posted six weeks earlier, created by the school board to oversee district-wide behavioral standards, teacher mentoring, and disciplinary appeals.

Patricia Dalton was not merely an applicant; she was the unanimous frontrunner endorsed by two members of the school board.

Inside the administrative suite, Assistant Principal Daniel Keene sat at his computer terminal with Gavin Monroe standing directly behind his right shoulder.

Keene pulled up the internal personnel portal, clicking into the candidate evaluation folder marked *Dalton, P. — Administrative Candidacy.*

The file contained twelve glowing peer reviews, four letters of commendation from the district superintendent, and a thirty-page personal manifesto titled *Accountability as Care: Restoring Rigor to the Middle School Environment.*

"She wrote the curriculum for behavioral interventions herself," Keene murmured, clicking through the scanned pages.

Tessa stood by the door, her coat still zipped, her arms crossed tight against her chest.

"Read her personal statement, Mr. Keene. Read what she claimed about student compliance."

Keene scrolled down to the third section, his voice faltering as he read the highlighted passage aloud:

*‘The modern classroom suffers from excessive accommodation. When minor domestic interruptions and routine medical excuses are permitted to erode academic deadlines, the educator abdicates moral authority. True pastoral care demands absolute, non-negotiable adherence to routine.’*

Gavin leaned down, pointing to the submission timestamp at the top of the browser.

"Look at the date on that application, Keene."

Keene looked.

The submission was stamped Monday afternoon at four-fifteen.

"She filed this application while Noah was still in the pediatric surgical ward," Gavin whispered, every word sharp as broken glass. "She was writing essays about eliminating medical excuses while my son had a drain in his abdomen."

Keene swallowed hard, unable to meet Gavin’s gaze.

"Her interview with the district superintendent was scheduled for tomorrow morning at nine o'clock," Keene said quietly. "If Ethan hadn't sent that video, she would have been confirmed as the head of discipline for this entire cluster of schools by Friday afternoon."

Tessa pulled her phone from her pocket, looking at the forty-second video clip that had already been backed up to three separate drives.

"She wanted to run the disciplinary system so she could make sure nobody ever questioned her methods again," Tessa said.

"Cancel the interview, Daniel," Gavin ordered flatly. "Or we will play this video directly for the school board in the middle of their public session."
