The doorbell chimed a second time, followed immediately by three heavy, measured thuds against the thick oak paneling of the front entrance.
Daniel pulled Emma’s heavy winter coat over her arms, zipped it all the way to her chin, and tucked the faded blue ledger into the deep inner pocket of his own overcoat.
"Emma," Daniel whispered, holding her face between his palms and looking straight into her eyes. "I need you to hold onto my neck and stay completely quiet. No matter what sounds you hear, don't say a word. Can you do that for Daddy?"
Emma nodded solemnly, pressing her face against his collar and tightening her small fingers in the fabric of his shirt.
Daniel lifted her into his arms, stepped out into the dark upper corridor, and moved silently toward the back staircase.
From down in the front entryway, Victoria’s strained, frightened voice floated up into the stairwell.
"Who is it?" she called out through the locked door.
"Mrs. Vale," a deep, rough voice answered from the front porch. "County Inspector Davies. We received an automated notification regarding an unpermitted basement excavation at this address."
Victoria didn't slide the deadbolt.
"There’s nothing wrong here," she stammered, her voice shaking with panic. "My husband and I are handling it. Please leave."
"Open the door, Victoria," the voice replied, the polite facade dropping away into a cold, flat growl. "We know the hinge switch was tripped forty minutes ago. Don't make this messy for your husband and child."
Daniel reached the bottom of the back stairs, stepping softly into the rear laundry room.
He eased the back utility door open, slipping out into the freezing night mist without making a sound.
The damp grass cushioned his footsteps as he carried Emma along the deep shadows cast by the tall cedar hedge separating the property from the open parkway.
Suddenly, the loud sound of splintering wood cracked through the quiet neighborhood air.
The front door had been kicked off its hinges.
"Clear the rooms!" a man shouted from inside the living room. "Find the girl, find the notebook, and secure the basement tunnel!"
Daniel tightened his grip around Emma’s waist, ducking low under the dripping pine branches as he sprinted through the open rear gate.
Behind him, bright lights flicked on in every bedroom window of his home, turning the house he had loved for seven years into a hostile fortress.
He didn't look back once.
He plunged straight into the dark woods toward the sound of the rushing creek, praying that the old bridge would still be standing.
