Daniel did not look at Victoria.
He simply pressed play.
On the screen, the argument in the kitchen broke apart as recorded Daniel took Emma by the hand.
The footage jumped as the motion sensors triggered the hallway camera.
Daniel felt a sudden hollow ache in his chest.
He had almost forgotten that camera existed, installed two years earlier after a break-in down the street.
The corridor remained empty for three long seconds.
Then recorded Daniel entered the frame, holding Emma close while Victoria followed a few steps behind.
Emma pulled her father toward the very end of the hallway, stopping directly in front of the narrow linen closet.
Sitting in the dark living room, Daniel frowned at the screen.
"The linen closet?"
Behind him, Victoria whispered, "Daniel, stop."
He ignored her completely.
On screen, recorded Daniel swung the closet door open.
Inside were ordinary household things—neat stacks of bath towels, bedsheets, and bottles of detergent.
Nothing unusual.
Emma shook her head frantically.
She reached her small arms past a pile of folded wool blankets, feeling around the back wall.
Her hand caught something.
With a sharp pull, a hidden vertical section of the wooden shelving swung forward on concealed brass hinges.
Behind the shelves stood a narrow, solid timber door.
Daniel slowly rose from his seat, staring in disbelief.
He had lived under this roof for seven years, and he had never known that door existed.
"What is that?" Daniel demanded, his voice dangerously low.
Victoria kept her eyes glued to the floorboards.
"It's just old storage from the original foundation."
"Then why is it hidden behind false cabinetry?"
"It was already there when we moved in," she stammered.
Daniel let out a bitter, mocking breath.
"You bought this house, Victoria. You told me the realtor found it on an open listing."
Victoria closed her eyes, tears leaking through her lashes.
"I lied."
A cold sweat broke out across Daniel's neck.
"Why?"
She didn't answer.
Daniel turned his gaze back to the glowing screen and hit play.
On screen, recorded Daniel pulled the narrow door open, revealing a pitch-black downward stairwell.
Emma clung tightly to his sleeve, trembling violently.
Daniel stepped into the dark opening, disappearing down the steps with Emma right behind him.
Victoria remained out in the hallway, pacing back and forth in sheer panic.
For two agonizing minutes, the camera showed only an empty hallway.
Then Daniel emerged back into the frame.
His recorded face was drained of all color, his jaw slack and his eyes wide with horror.
Emma followed, sobbing into her hands.
Recorded Daniel grabbed Victoria by both shoulders, his mouth moving in a single, furious word:
WHO?
Victoria backed away, shaking her head.
Then the system feed cut again, switching to an unlisted internal camera Daniel had never seen.
Grainy black-and-white footage of a finished basement bunker filled the monitor.
Concrete walls. A single cot. A desk covered in framed pictures.
A woman walked into the frame carrying a tray of soup.
Daniel stopped breathing.
Thin frame. Gray hair swept behind her ears.
His mother, Helen.
The woman he had buried in an oak casket four years ago after an apparent stroke.
Daniel staggered backward, knocking against the kitchen island, his hand clamping over his mouth in raw shock.
"Mom?"
Victoria curled into herself on the sofa, sobbing into her palms.
"Daniel, please... she begged me to hide her."
