Chapter 12 - THE FBI ARRIVES

Davies dropped his pistol into the mud with a dull splash, throwing his hands high above his head and dropping to his knees without waiting for a second order.

Gregory Miller stood frozen in the glare of the police spotlights, the rain drumming against the black fabric of his umbrella.

His hand trembled violently around the wooden handle of his revolver, his eyes darting frantically between the wall of state troopers advancing with tactical rifles.

"Put it down, Miller!" a voice boomed from behind an open squad car door. "Do not throw your life away!"

Miller slowly let his fingers uncurl.

The revolver slipped from his grip, thudding into the wet gravel beside his polished leather shoes.

Two state troopers rushed forward, kicking the weapon out of reach and tackling the deputy commissioner face-down into the cold slurry.

They yanked his arms roughly behind his back, the sharp metallic click of handcuffs snapping shut in the rain.

Daniel let out a long, ragged breath that tore through his chest, staggering backward against the dented fender of the sedan.

Inside the car, the horn finally went silent as Victoria pulled the wire loose from the terminal.

A tall woman in a dark federal overcoat walked toward Daniel, holding a gold badge out in the beam of the spotlights.

"Mr. Vale?" she asked, her voice calm and authoritative. "I'm Special Agent Vance from the Chicago field office."

Daniel wiped the rain from his eyes, his voice hoarse. "How did you find us out here?"

The driver’s door of the sedan opened, and Victoria stepped out, leaning against the frame for support.

"I initiated an encrypted distress transmission from my phone twenty minutes ago," Victoria said, her voice shaking from exhaustion. "Every bank statement, the ledger copies, and my father's audio recordings were uploaded to the state prosecutor's secure server."

Victoria looked directly at Agent Vance, offering her wrists without hesitation.

"I'm ready to surrender myself into federal custody," she whispered.

Agent Vance looked at the bruised cheekbone, the torn coat, and the shivering family inside the broken vehicle.

"The attorneys will deal with your statements tomorrow, Mrs. Vale," Vance said gently. "Right now, your child and your mother-in-law need immediate medical attention."

Daniel walked to the back door, opening it wide and lifting Emma into his arms.

Helen stepped out behind them, wrapped in a bright silver thermal blanket handed to her by a state police paramedic.

For the first time in four years, Helen looked up into the open night sky without a basement ceiling above her head.

She touched Daniel’s arm and smiled through her tears.

"We made it, Daniel," she whispered softly.
