Chapter 5 - MORNING IN THE SUNROOM

Sunlight broke over the horizon, bathing the estate in soft, golden radiance.

In the second-floor sunroom, Mia sat curled up on a wide velvet window seat surrounded by plush toys and soft pillows.

She wore a pair of clean yellow pajamas, holding a stuffed velvet bear against her chest as she watched two robins hop across the stone balustrade outside.

A gentle knock sounded at the door, and Damon walked in carrying a silver tray.

On the tray rested a warm bowl of oatmeal with brown sugar, a glass of fresh milk, and a small slice of vanilla cake decorated with a single fresh strawberry.

Mia looked up, her eyes wide with caution, before looking down at the tray.

"Is the party over?" she asked timidly.

"The party is over, Mia," Damon smiled softly, setting the tray on the low table in front of her.

"From now on, you never have to ask permission to eat in this house."

Mia reached out, touching the strawberry with her index finger, feeling its cool, smooth skin.

"Mama said good things only happen in dreams," she whispered, looking into Damon’s face.

Damon knelt down beside the window seat, resting his arm gently against the cushion.

"Your mama loved you very much, Mia. She was my sister’s dearest friend."

He pulled a small gold locket from his pocket, opening it to reveal an old photograph of Clara and Sarah laughing together under a blooming cherry tree.

Mia stared at the image, her tiny hand rising to touch the photo.

"That's Mama," she whispered, tears spilling silently down her cheeks.

"Yes, it is," Damon said, his voice thick with emotion as he gently wiped the tears from her chin.

"Your mama gave you to this house, Mia. And as long as I am breathing, no one will ever push you away again."

Mia leaned forward, wrapping her thin arms around Damon's neck, burying her face into his shoulder.

Damon held the little girl close against his heart, feeling the fragile, miraculous weight of a promised fulfilled.
