Chapter 2 - THE RIBBON AROUND HER WRIST

Elisa Rochefort stood motionless under the lantern light, her diamond-clad hand trembling against her throat.

Two private security guards stepped forward, politely but firmly gesturing toward the garden gates.

Her husband attempted to intervene, but a single, piercing glance from Damon silenced him completely.

The disgraced socialite was escorted past the manicured hedges, leaving a stunned, breathless silence behind her.

Damon turned his full attention back to the child on the grass.

Mia sat cross-legged, holding the porcelain plate on her knees, eating the sweet sponge cake with small, hurried bites.

She chewed with a ravenous desperation, as though she expected someone to snatch the food away at any second.

"Slow down, Mia," Damon said gently, crouching beside her. "No one is going to take it from you."

Mia swallowed, licking a trace of sweet cream from her small thumb.

As her arm shifted, the torn sleeve of her faded cotton blouse pulled back.

Damon’s gaze caught on a faded, frayed satin ribbon tied tightly around her left wrist.

Attached to the frayed fabric was a tarnished copper medical charm, scratched and dulled by dirt.

Engraved on the metal surface was a patient tracking number and a faded emblem:

*St. Jude Pediatric Hospice — Ward 4.*

Damon’s breath seized in his chest.

His late sister, Clara, had spent her final months in that very ward five years ago before succumbing to leukemia.

Damon had funded that entire wing in her memory, creating a fund specifically designed to support terminal mothers and their infants.

He reached out a careful hand, pointing toward the copper tag.

"Mia," Damon asked in a quiet, trembling voice, "who gave you this ribbon?"

Mia looked down at her wrist, curling her thin fingers around the tarnished charm.

"Mama tied it on before the long sleep," she whispered, her hazel eyes glistening under the amber fairy lights.

"She told me if I ever got lost in the cold, I had to find the building with the white stone angels."

Damon’s heart contracted violently.

The Sterling estate sat barely half a mile from the entrance of St. Jude's hospice gardens, where two massive carved stone angels guarded the memorial fountain.

This child hadn't wandered into a party by accident.

She had been following her dying mother’s final instructions, walking through the dark on bare feet until the lights led her here.

Damon stood up, scooping Mia into his arms along with the plate of cake, cradling her thin, fragile body against his chest.

He turned toward Julian.

"Bring the car around to the front portico. Call Dr. Marcus Evans and tell him to meet us at the estate clinic immediately."

Julian nodded, speaking urgently into his radio as he parted the crowd of silent onlookers.

Damon carried the little girl through the French doors into the warmth of the manor, leaving the hollow vanity of the gala behind for good.
