Today was Lily’s eighth birthday.
It was her first real birthday celebration.
The manicured lawn where the charity gala had taken place one year earlier was decorated with pastel ribbons, yellow balloons, and long wooden tables filled with sweets.
There were no snobbish donors in designer evening gowns, no velvet ropes, and no armed guards checking invitation cards.
The lawn was filled with Lily’s classmates from St. Jude’s Academy, children from the dockside shelter, and the loyal estate staff who loved her like family.
In the center of the terrace stood a towering four-tier white cake, decorated with fresh strawberries, vanilla bean frosting, and spun-sugar roses.
Lily stood at the head of the table, wearing a bright yellow sundress and her shiny red shoes, her dark hair crowned with a wreath of daisies.
Aunt Clara sat beside her in a comfortable armchair, clapping her hands with pure delight as the children sang the birthday song.
Damon stepped forward with the silver cake server—the very same tool he had used to cut her a slice on that fateful night.
He handed the server to Lily, wrapping his hand over hers.
"Make a big wish, my brave girl," Damon whispered gently in her ear.
Lily closed her eyes tight, took a deep breath, and blew out the eight glowing candles in one joyous puff.
The lawn erupted into cheers, laughter, and enthusiastic applause.
Lily looked down at the cake, then turned to look at the smiling faces of the children surrounding her.
"Let's cut the biggest slices for everyone!" she shouted happily, driving the server deep into the sweet sponge.
Damon laughed, watching the pure joy radiating from her soul, knowing that every shadow of the past had finally been conquered by light.
