Chapter 15 - THE PUBLIC RECKONING

By Friday, the federal indictment of the Kensington family dominated national headlines.

The financial press exposed forty million dollars in laundered assets, shell companies, and fraudulent non-profit accounts.

Richard Kensington was held without bail at the metropolitan detention center, facing thirty years in federal prison for attempted murder and grand larceny.

Victoria Kensington’s social empire had vaporized overnight.

Charity boards stripped her name from donor plaques, high-end boutiques closed her credit lines, and former socialite friends refused her calls.

At two in the afternoon, Damon held a formal press briefing in the grand hall of the Sterling Foundation.

Over sixty journalists packed the room, camera flashes illuminating the podium.

Damon stood alone behind the microphones, dressed in an immaculate dark suit.

"For seven years, this foundation operated under the illusion that high-society charity was enough," Damon spoke clearly, his voice carrying absolute authority.

"We allowed arrogance and social prestige to mask corruption and cruelty."

He paused, letting the silence settle over the room.

"Last Saturday night, a woman who donated hundreds of thousands of dollars told a hungry, barefoot child that food was not for her."

"Today, I announce the complete dissolution of the Society of Benefactors."

A wave of astonished gasps rippled through the press corps.

"The Sterling Foundation will no longer operate as a tax shelter or an exclusive club for the elite," Damon declared firmly.

"Fifty percent of the foundation's endowment—over four hundred million dollars—is being transferred into an irrevocable trust dedicated to street children, underfunded foster care networks, and emergency medical aid."

"The foundation will no longer be named for prestige."

"Effective today, it will be known as the Elena and Lily Sterling Hope Foundation."

The press room erupted into thunderous, resounding applause.
