Chapter 2

Vanessa took three stumbling steps backward until her spine hit the nursery wall.

The tears vanished from her eyes as if wiped clean by a rag.

Julian stared at the phone screen, his breathing shallow and dangerous.

“Play the rest of it,” he whispered.

He didn't shout.

The quiet made the room ten times colder.

On the screen, the timestamp read twelve minutes before I entered.

Vanessa stood beside Noah’s crib with her phone pressed to her ear.

She wasn't comforting him.

She was watching him scream while she talked.

“Once the baby is gone, everything belongs to me.”

Then a second voice answered through the phone’s speaker.

A man’s voice.

Low.

Calculated.

Familiar.

“Make sure the nanny takes the fall, Vanessa. The police will buy a careless domestic accident. Once the infant is gone, Julian has no direct heir under the trust.”

Julian’s face went gray.

His fingers gripped the phone so hard the glass creaked.

He knew that voice.

I knew that voice.

It was Thomas Whitmore.

Julian’s younger brother.

The man Julian had bailed out of debt three times before cutting him off from the family conglomerate.

“Thomas…” Julian whispered, looking up from the screen.

Vanessa’s expression twisted from panic into cold, bitter hatred.

“You think you’re so righteous, Julian,” she hissed, pulling herself upright against the wall.

“You married me to help your brother murder my son?”

“I married you because Thomas promised me forty percent of the estate!” she spat.

“You gave me a mansion, but you kept every cent locked in Noah’s trust fund!”

“I was never going to spend the rest of my life playing mother to another woman’s baby for an allowance!”

Noah sobbed against my shoulder, his small chest trembling against mine.

Julian tapped his watch screen.

“Security. Take Mrs. Whitmore into custody in the study. Call the sheriff's office.”

Two estate guards in suits entered the nursery within seconds.

Vanessa fought them, kicking and screaming obscenities as they dragged her into the hall.

Julian stood motionless in the center of the room.

He looked at the blood running down my temple from the blow.

Then he looked at Noah’s unharmed skin.

“You took the iron for him,” Julian said, his voice cracking.

“I promised his mother I would keep him safe, sir.”

Julian stepped toward us, reaching out a trembling hand to cup the back of Noah’s head.

“Rachel, I almost questioned you.”

“You were panicked, Mr. Whitmore.”

“That is no excuse.”

He pulled his phone back out to dial his corporate security team.

Before he could press call, his private line rang.

Thomas.

Julian hit the speaker button.

Thomas’s voice echoed into the quiet room, completely calm:

“Vanessa, is the nanny arrested yet? The board meeting to freeze Julian’s executive authority starts in twenty minutes.”
