Chapter 23 - THE SALON

Author:

On a bright Saturday morning in May, Ethan drove Lily to a sunlit salon on Main Street.

The shop was called *Clara’s Studio*, run by an elderly woman with silver curls who had been a dear friend of Laura’s for twenty years.

For fourteen months, Lily had refused to let anyone touch her hair with scissors, preferring to wear it pinned back or hidden beneath scarves.

Today, she had asked Ethan to make the appointment herself.

Clara greeted them with warm, open arms, wrapping Lily in a soft silk cape and seating her in the large hydraulic leather chair.

Lily looked into the grand mirrored wall, seeing her reflection clearly in the bright morning light.

Her hair was long on the right, while the left side had grown into a wild, uneven shoulder-length cascade of dark waves.

“What are we thinking today, my beautiful girl?” Clara asked gently, combing through the strands with soft, experienced fingers.

Lily looked at the magazine open on her lap, pointing to a photograph of a modern, stylish bob cut that framed the chin with sharp, elegant confidence.

“I want to cut it all even, Clara,” Lily said, her voice clear and sure.

“I want to start fresh.”

Clara smiled warmly, picking up her professional shears from the tray.

“You’ve got your mother’s strong jaw, Lily,” Clara whispered.

“This cut was made for you.”

SNIP.

The sound that had once brought terror now felt light, clean, and freeing.

Soft strands fell onto the black cape, landing like feathers.

Ethan stood near the reception desk, watching his daughter’s transformation with tears of quiet, profound joy in his eyes.

Twenty minutes later, Clara removed the cape with a flourishing snap, turning the chair toward the mirror.

Lily gasped softly, her hands rising to touch her hair.

It was sleek, modern, and perfectly balanced, highlighting her bright hazel eyes and her warm, radiant smile.

The scars of Room 104 had vanished completely.

There was only a brilliant, confident thirteen-year-old girl looking back at her future.

“I love it,” Lily beamed, turning to throw her arms around Ethan’s waist.

“You look magnificent, sweetheart,” Ethan whispered, kissing her cheek.

“Completely magnificent.”
