Chapter 11 - SOPHIA’S PHONE

Author:

The digital forensics lab at the county sheriff's department was quiet and sterile.

Technician Dave Miller placed Sophia’s smartphone onto a secure mounting dock beneath an overhead digital capture camera.

Ethan and Sarah Reed stood behind the glass partition, watching the process unfold.

“The original file is completely intact,” Miller announced, typing commands into his terminal.

“The metadata confirms the recording started at two-fourteen in the afternoon on Tuesday.”

“Did she capture the audio of the desk conversation?” Ethan asked.

Miller adjusted the audio filters, running the file through an acoustic isolation software.

The classroom background noise faded, bringing two voices into terrifyingly sharp focus.

*“Give me that paper, Lily,”* Mrs. Hartley’s voice hissed through the studio monitors.

*“You have no right to look through my private folders.”*

*“It has my mom’s name,”* Lily’s small, trembling voice replied.

*“My mom said you were stealing from the state before she went to the hospital.”*

A sharp gasp came through the speaker, followed by the metallic sliding sound of the top desk drawer opening.

*“You think you can challenge me in my own room?”* Mrs. Hartley’s voice was venomous.

*“You think your dead mother can protect you from behind a grave?”*

*“Sit in that chair. Right now.”*

*“By the time your father gets here, nobody in this town will believe a single word that comes out of your mouth.”*

Then came the cold, sickening sound of the first cut:

SNIP.

Sarah Reed covered her face with both hands, sobbing quietly into her palms.

Ethan gripped the steel railing of the observation deck so tightly his knuckles turned white as chalk.

“That audio proves premeditation,” Detective Miller said, stepping up beside Ethan.

“She didn't lose her temper in a heated moment.”

“She systematically assaulted that child to discredit her testimony before she could speak to an adult.”

“The video is going straight to the state supreme court archive.”
