In the gatehouse conference room, Vanessa was seated under the cold fluorescent lights, her arms wrapped around her knees as she stared sullenly at the wall.
When the heavy exterior door swung open, she leaped up, expecting to see Marcus coming to apologize.
Instead, two uniformed county police officers stepped into the room, followed by a female detective wearing a sharp gray trench coat and carrying a thick clipboard.
"Vanessa Ward?" Detective Miller asked, her voice calm, professional, and completely devoid of warmth.
Vanessa blinked, her chest heaving under her silk blouse.
"Itβs Vanessa Sterling," she corrected sharply, trying to summon her customary arrogance. "And I demand to know why you are trespassing on private property!"
Detective Miller didn't flinch.
She unclipped a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from her belt and stepped forward.
"According to court filings processed an hour ago, your marital status is subject to an emergency restraining order, Ms. Ward," Detective Miller stated flatly. "I have a warrant for your arrest signed by Judge Harrison."
Vanessa stumbled backward, her hands flying to her mouth.
"A warrant? For what? On what possible grounds?"
"Felony child endangerment, aggravated assault on a minor, and unlawful restraint," Detective Miller replied, closing the distance between them. "Turn around and place your hands behind your back."
"No! This is a mistake! You don't understand what happened!" Vanessa shrieked, backing toward the corner of the room like a cornered animal. "The girl was being defiant! Iβm her stepmother! I have parental rights to discipline her!"
The two uniformed officers stepped in smoothly, grabbing Vanessa by both wrists before she could kick or strike out.
They twisted her arms behind her back with practiced efficiency, and the heavy metal ratchets snapped shut around her delicate wrists.
"You have no rights over that child, Ms. Ward," Detective Miller said, leaning in close so her words were impossible to misunderstand. "We have reviewed the kitchen surveillance tape. Forcing a six-year-old child to eat from an animal dish while pinning her down constitutes aggravated criminal abuse."
"Marcus! Marcus, help me!" Vanessa screamed toward the open doorway, her voice cracking into hysterical, desperate sobs. "You can't let them do this to me!"
Marcus stepped into the doorway, standing beside Arthur Pendelton.
His face was an unreadable mask of cold stone as he looked at the woman in handcuffs.
"Your duffel bags are in the trunk of the cruiser, Vanessa," Marcus said, his voice quiet, steady, and utterly final. "Arthur will deliver your divorce petition to your cell at the county holding facility by morning."
"You ruined me!" Vanessa spat, thrashing against the officers' grip, tears and mascara running down her face. "You promised me everything!"
"I promised to love a good woman and protect my family," Marcus said coldly, stepping aside to let the officers pass. "You are neither."
The police led her out into the cold night rain, her frantic screams fading down the long, dark driveway as the cruiser doors slammed shut.
