Chapter 5 - THE PRENUPTIAL CLAUSE

At midnight, Marcus sat behind the mahogany desk in his private study, a crystal glass of untouched scotch resting beside his laptop.

Across the desk sat Arthur Pendelton, Marcus’s chief corporate attorney, who had arrived at the mansion within forty minutes of receiving the emergency summon.

Arthur adjusted his wire-rimmed glasses, spreading several thick legal documents across the leather blotter.

"The prenuptial agreement you signed with Vanessa six months ago is remarkably clear, Marcus," Arthur said, tapping a red pen against the eighth page.

"Read it to me, Arthur," Marcus commanded quietly.

"Section Twelve, Subsection B: The Morality and Custodial Protection Clause," Arthur read aloud in a steady, professional cadence. "In the event that the secondary spouse commits, participates in, or facilitates any act of documented physical abuse, neglect, or emotional endangerment against any minor dependent residing within the marital household, all claims to marital assets, spousal support, lump-sum settlements, and residential rights are nullified immediately upon formal filing of a police report."

Marcus leaned back into his leather chair, a cold, ruthless smile touching the corners of his lips.

"So she leaves with nothing."

"Less than nothing," Arthur confirmed, sliding a blue manila folder forward. "According to our forensic review of her pre-marital disclosures, Vanessa entered this marriage with over four hundred thousand dollars in high-interest personal credit card debts and pending civil judgments from unpaid luxury retail leases in New York."

Marcus frowned, his eyes darkening. "She claimed those debts were cleared by her family trust before our wedding."

"She forged the clearance letters, Marcus," Arthur revealed, pointing to a series of bank statements attached to the back of the file. "She has been using the secondary debit card from your household expense account to make minimum monthly payments on those debts since July."

Marcus squeezed his hands into fists under the desk.

Every sweet word, every affectionate smile she had offered him over the past six months had been calculated.

She had targeted him after Sarah's death, knowing he was a grieving widower with an immense fortune and a vulnerable young daughter.

She didn't just resent Lily; she viewed the little girl as an obstacle to securing total control over the Sterling estate.

"What is the timeline for her arrest?" Marcus asked.

"Detective Miller from the Special Victims Division has reviewed the kitchen footage and Dr. Evans’s clinical report," Arthur answered, checking his watch. "An arrest warrant for felony child abuse and endangerment was signed by a county judge twenty minutes ago."

Marcus stood up, buttoning his suit jacket.

"Let's make sure she's packed before the squad cars arrive."
