Valentina moved Elliot to a private bridal lounge with his pediatrician and a trusted nanny.
The wedding ceremony had already happened earlier in the afternoon.
She had no interest in ruining Olivia’s marriage because Gloria assaulted a child.
The reception itself was paused while staff cleaned the ballroom and security removed Gloria from the property.
Olivia came into the lounge crying.
Not about the ruined seating display or broken mirrored glass.
About Elliot.
“I’m sorry, Valentina.”
Valentina looked at her.
“You didn’t hit him.”
“No.”
“But she’s my mother.”
“That doesn’t make you responsible for her hands.”
Olivia wiped her eyes with a lace handkerchief.
“Is he okay?”
Elliot nodded from the plush sofa.
“My cupcake died on the floor.”
Olivia laughed softly through her tears.
“I’ll get you another one from the kitchen.”
Valentina looked at her son with a gentle smile.
“Only if he wants one.”
“I want two,” Elliot insisted.
That was more like him.
Nathan stood silently in the doorway looking exhausted and pale.
Olivia turned toward him.
“What happened with Mom?”
“She left.”
“Good.”
Nathan stared at his sister with strange intensity.
Olivia frowned.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
Again.
That suppressed, unmistakable fear.
Valentina dismissed it for the moment and walked downstairs to the venue office.
The disputed invoices came from three separate vendors.
A luxury transportation company.
A private floral subcontractor.
And Mercer Heritage Events.
Valentina stopped, reading the header.
“Mercer.”
The venue manager nodded cautiously.
“Owned directly by Mrs. Gloria Mercer.”
Gloria.
Valentina had never heard of it until today.
“How much was billed under that name?”
“Ninety-six thousand dollars through Mercer Heritage alone.”
“For what?”
“Family coordination, guest management, premium favor sourcing, and event consulting.”
Valentina stared at the crushed favor boxes still being gathered from the ballroom floor.
“I paid the wedding planner directly.”
“Yes.”
“I paid the venue coordination fee upfront.”
“Yes.”
“I paid for the favors.”
“Yes.”
“Then what did Gloria do for ninety-six thousand dollars?”
The manager looked deeply uncomfortable.
“I don’t know.”
Nathan arrived behind her, his voice quiet.
“It’s probably just family accounting.”
Valentina turned around slowly.
“What does that mean?”
“Mom coordinated things behind the scenes.”
“She attended meetings as an invited guest.”
“She did more than that.”
“How much more?”
Nathan said nothing.
Valentina asked:
“Did you know she was billing the wedding?”
Nathan glanced nervously toward the hallway where Olivia stood.
“Keep your voice down.”
That was answer enough.
Valentina felt the problem move beneath her feet.
Gloria had not simply resented Valentina’s wealth and Corsetti name.
She had been charging against it.
And Nathan knew far more than he wanted to say.
