Chapter 4 - THE INK OF BETRAYAL

Domenico opened the leather ledger on the stainless steel inspection table.

The pages were dense with meticulous accounting figures.

Dates, bank routing codes, shipping manifest numbers, and corporate stamps.

Every transaction was written in the neat, slanted script of Angelo Valenti.

Marco stood at the far corner of the table, his arms crossed over his chest.

"Our father kept records of every shipment from the docks," Marco muttered.

"This is routine commercial history."

"Look at the red column, Marco," Domenico said calmly.

He turned to the section dated October fourteenth, twenty-two years ago.

The exact week the warehouse fire claimed Enzo’s life.

In the center of the page was an entry underlined twice in red ink.

*Diverted Consignment: Four Point Two Million.*

Beneath the figure were two signatures acknowledging receipt of the diverted capital.

Neither signature belonged to Enzo.

The first name belonged to a defunct offshore holding entity registered in Panama.

The second signature was written in bold, looping letters:

*Marco Valenti.*

Marco’s face lost every shade of color in an instant.

He took a step back, bumping against the metal inspection bench.

"That's a forgery," Marco choked out.

"Someone wanted to pit brother against brother."

"Our father signed this page as an official witness," Domenico countered, pointing to the bottom seal.

"Angelo knew you took the funds."

"He knew Enzo discovered the discrepancy during the quarterly dock audit."

Camilla pushed herself away from the wall, her voice sharp and trembling.

"Enzo went to that warehouse because Marco promised to show him the missing bills of lading."

Her eyes locked onto Marco with blistering fury.

"You told my father you would clear the discrepancy with Angelo in private."

"And then the diesel tanks exploded."

Marco looked between his wife and his brother, his breath hitching rapidly.

"It was an electrical fault!" Marco shouted, his voice cracking against the concrete walls.

"The fire marshals ruled it an accidental spark from the wiring harness!"

Domenico turned the page of the ledger.

Tucked between the leaves was an official carbon copy of a report that had never been filed in court.

A forensic evaluation of the warehouse ruins.

Traces of accelerated petroleum solvent had been discovered on the internal steel bolts of the exit doors.

The doors had been chained shut from the outside before the fire began.

Domenico looked up from the table, his gaze dark as midnight.

"You didn't just steal the family capital, Marco."

"You locked Enzo in that room to keep him from talking to our father."
