Chapter 12 - THE CHOICE

Author:

With Vanessa’s false family exposed, the legal probate process began to move forward with absolute clarity.

On Friday morning, our family attorney, Arthur Pendelton, arrived at the house carrying three heavy leather briefcases.

We sat around the large dining table, steam rising from fresh mugs of coffee Clara had prepared for us.

Arthur spread a stack of legal contracts across the dark wood.

“Adrian,” Arthur began, adjusting his spectacles. “Now that the Vance family’s fraudulent claims have been formally dismissed by the court, Elena’s architectural firm falls entirely into your administration.”

He tapped a blue document with his pen.

“You have two distinct choices under the terms of Elena’s original corporate charter.”

Lily walked into the dining room quietly, holding her sketchbook, and leaned her chin against my forearm to watch the papers.

“What are the choices, Arthur?” I asked.

“Option one is full liquidation,” Arthur explained. “We sell the firm’s architectural assets, patents, and commercial real estate to a multinational developer. After clearing all outstanding vendor liabilities, you and Lily walk away with roughly twenty-eight million dollars in cash.”

It was an enormous sum. More than enough to leave Chicago forever, buy a secluded villa in Europe, and ensure Lily never had to work a day in her life.

“And option two?” I inquired.

Arthur turned to a second folder stamped with Elena’s hand-drawn company crest—a blooming mountain laurel.

“Option two is restructuring,” Arthur said softly. “Elena had spent the last two years of her life designing a non-profit foundation dedicated to building low-income housing and community parks across the state.”

He looked at me over his glasses.

“Marcus wanted to kill that project because it yielded no personal profit margins. If you choose option two, you decline the cash buyout and fund Elena’s foundation in its entirety.”

I looked down at Lily.

She was tracing the outline of her mother’s company crest on the paper with her small fingertip.

“What would Mommy do, Daddy?” Lily asked, looking up into my eyes with complete innocence.

The answer was clear before the question had even left her lips.

Elena had never cared about designer labels, luxury galas, or offshore accounts. She had poured her heart into making the world kinder, safer, and more beautiful for families who had nothing.

I picked up the fountain pen from the table.

“Draw up the paperwork for the foundation, Arthur,” I said without a single trace of hesitation.

Arthur smiled, nodding with deep respect. “Your wife would be exceptionally proud, Adrian.”

I signed my name across the bottom line, dedicating every asset Marcus had tried to steal back to the people Elena had loved most.
